Hidden Falls & Ancient Forests

Off the beaten path. The waterfalls most visitors never find.

While two million people crowd Multnomah Falls every year, these waterfalls see a fraction of the traffic — and they're just as stunning. This tour takes you to the Gorge's best-kept secrets: Wahclella Falls, hidden in a narrow basalt canyon. Elowah Falls, a thundering 289-foot plunge that most people drive right past. Upper McCord Creek Falls, requiring a short but rewarding hike through old-growth forest. More hiking, fewer crowds, deeper stories. This tour is for people who want to earn their waterfalls.

Highlights

  • Wahclella Falls — A powerful cascade hidden in a narrow basalt box canyon
  • Elowah Falls — 289 feet of thundering water that most visitors never see
  • Upper McCord Creek Falls — A rewarding hike through ancient forest
  • Old-growth Douglas fir and Western red cedar forest
  • Fewer crowds, deeper immersion in the landscape

Your Day, Hour by Hour

  • 1
    8:00 AM
    Meet at Mt. Hood Village
Coffee and trail briefing. Your guide reviews fitness levels and trail conditions, adjusting the route to match the group.
Today's hikes go to places most Gorge visitors never find. The trailheads aren't on the main highway.
  • 2
    8:45 AM
    Wahclella Falls Trail
A 2-mile round trip into a narrow basalt canyon. The trail follows Tanner Creek through old-growth forest to a double-plunge waterfall.
The Wahclella name comes from the Chinook people who fished these creeks for thousands of years before the first European set foot in the Gorge. The fish are still here.
  • 3
    10:30 AM
    Elowah Falls
Short approach to a massive 289-foot waterfall that splits around a basalt pillar. One of the least-visited major falls in the Gorge.
Most visitors skip Elowah because it's a half-mile off Historic Highway 30. Their loss. You're about to see why the guide made it a centerpiece.
  • 4
    12:00 PM
    Trail Lunch
Packed lunch at a scenic overlook with views of the river and the Washington shore. Your guide tells the story of the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire.
The fire was started by a 15-year-old with a firework. It burned 50,000 acres. The Gorge's recovery from it is one of the most remarkable ecological stories in Oregon.
  • 5
    1:00 PM
    Upper McCord Creek Falls
The most challenging section of the day — a steep climb through old-growth forest to a multi-tiered waterfall most people have never heard of.
Some of the Douglas fir trees on this trail are over 800 years old. They were already ancient when the first European ships entered the Columbia.
  • 6
    3:00 PM
    Return to Mt. Hood Village
Drop-off at basecamp. Your guide has hot springs recommendations for sore muscles and can point you toward the best spots in the area.
